Golden Fable at The Deaf Institute

Golden Fable is a new side project of Tim and Sam's Tim and the Sam Band with Tim and Sam. Featuring Tim and Becca from the group, the music still has the same ethereal quality to it but with a bit more of beat underlying the songs and featuring a great deal more singing. They actually stepped away from their microphones at one point, jumping down in front of the stage and performing acoustically for one song. A section of the crowd were making a lot of noise during the performance up until that point but they were shushed into silence while they played.

If you'd like to listen to their music, they've released a couple of singles so far which are available from their online shop along with some lovely t-shirts, printed by those fine folk Peris and Corr (who are also responsible for my Cardboard Kid t-shirts.

Tim and Sam's Band..., Retro Bar Basement Club, March 16th 2009

Tim and Sam's Tim and the Sam Band with Tim and Sam
You can find my Guestlist review of the gig here. I wasn't entirely happy with what I'd written, so here's a re-written version of it:
Fresh from their London residency Tim and Sam’s Tim and the Sam Band with Tim and Sam (hereafter known as Tim and Sam’s Band) come onstage the fourth of five bands on tonight’s line-up. In contrast to the others - Idola, Bayonets, The Night Life Crisis and Portman, which all feature loud guitars and crashing drums, Tim and Sam’s Band play melodic circling instrumentals, all underscored by the sound of a xylophone.

Most of tonight’s songs, such as opener Stepping Stones, are drawn from their Put Your Slippers On EP, with Tim and fellow band members Rebecca, Adam and Richard (Sam doesn’t get involved due to being imaginary) constantly swapping instruments to build and add layers to the songs and somehow manage not to fall over each over on the small stage. Listening to them is like being enveloped in a warm, comfortable blanket of noise. They’re a gently eccentric bunch, handing out free tea-bags with all their merchandise and wearing primary coloured-coordinated tops, but that just adds to their charm. The audience takes to them, supplying enthusiastic applause between songs though there are a few mutterings to heard from around the bar. A couple of new songs are debuted during the set with the second Morning Air drawing things to a magnificent close with it’s triple drum beating ending.

This is Tim and Sam’s last gig in Manchester for the time being so you might have a bit of a wait before you’ll be able to catch them again.

I've uploaded a whole load of photographs over on flickr, so rather than post them all here it's slideshow time again...

Out and about in Manchester: New Islington Urban Folk Festival

I popped on over to the New Islington Festival a couple of weeks back. It's a strange event, designed to promote a development that's far from finished, as can be seen from the photographs below:

Old and New

My main reason for popping along was to see the excellent Tim and Sam's Tim and Sam Band with Tim and Sam, who were playing in the late afternoon slot. I highly recomend purchasing their new Put Your Slippers On EP - on sale now for a measly Five pounds. And here's some photos of the group as well:
