Castle Hohengeroldseck lies in ruins atop Schönberg hill, having been destroyed by French soldiers in 1688 and never having been rebuilt. Today, a local society work to preserve the place with visitors free to explore the remains. It's even possible to climb the one remaining turret and take in the spectacular view of the surrounding countryside, the rolling hills of the Black Forest stretching out before you. An unexpected delight, I highly recommend a visit if you're in the area.
