Out and about in Manchester: One of these is different to the other's

Manc 002

I've always been curious about this building on Portland Street. It's such a different shape and design to the rest of the block. I'm guessing that once upon a time the other building's were the same design and height, but for some reason, it's just this one left. Does anyone know the history of this building and the block?

I don't, but I'm led to believe the pub next door (the Grey Mare?) is the smallest in Manchester. It is tiny - and this I know for a fact!
