Williamson Tunnels, Liverpool

Following on from Tales of the Undercroft and my previous tunnel visit here in Manchester, I also have tales to tell of underground adventures further afield.

Under the Edge Hill area of Liverpool runs a labyrinth of tunnels constructed during the early 19th century under the direction of Joseph Williamson. Dubbed the Williamson Tunnels, a small section is accessible at the Williamson Tunnel Heritage Centre with tours taking place every 20 minutes durning opening hours.

It's a fascinating place to visit, with mystery still surrounding the reason for the tunnels construction and the extent to which they run under the city. Their clearance is an ongoing project and a selection of discoveries can be seen at the end of the tour.

Sunset on Pensarn Beach

I fell out of the habit of writing blog entries a couple of weeks back and it's taken me until now to start getting back into the grove. Not that I haven't been busy, as you might notice from the many and various tags under every post now along with the updating to the location map.

So I'll be posting new stuff on here all this week along with trying to get started on a couple of ideas I've got floating around my head.

I went home to North Wales over the Easter weekend to see the family and have a break from the big city. What I love to do while I'm there is to pop down to Pensarn beach for the sunset. I was never one to go swimming in the sea when I was a kid but I do enjoy watching the sun settling down for the evening - It's a beautiful sight to behold if you're there at the right time.

I also did some quick Rock Balancing - but I'm saving those photos for a separate entry.

Bears with Beer

The following were all found in a motorway service station near Korenica, just outside the Plitvice National Park. The stuffed animals I can understand as decorations, albeit of the slightly grim variety...

But I'm not so sure about the more unusual sights of Bears drinking beer and a band of foxes. What do you reckon? Cute or cruel?

Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Plitvice Lakes National Park is a stunning beautiful place, filled with lakes, waterfalls and all manner of wildlife. The shoals of fish crystal clear waters while giant dragonflies hover overhead. The pathways that you follow around the park take you right along side and sometimes over the water. It's hard to believe that this is where the Croatian War of Independence began.

A word of advice - If you plan on going, get their early. We spent a blissfull hour walking around the upper lakes with no one around but by the time midday rolled around, the place was packed.

Substructure of Diocletian's Palace, Split.

Covering a vast underground network, the substructure of Diocletian's Palace in Split was for me the most impressive part of the Old City. What I found most suprising was how much the surface world intrudes below. Music from above-ground bars and resturants filters through grills and doorways. Sunlight streams in from open areas of ceiling.

It's also still in regular use, with installation art taking place in small side rooms, which was a nice find.
